Tripod dog (three-legged)
Canela’s story began when we saw a Facebook post about a dog wandering in a neighborhood on the outskirts of La Paz. When we found her, she was shy and cautious but didn’t run away. As she walked we noticed she was limping and unable to use her front left leg.

During her veterinary exams Canela tested positive for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma, two tick-borne illnesses common in this region. She completed treatment successfully and is now fully recovered.
X-rays later confirmed a brachial plexus avulsion, meaning the nerves in her leg were permanently damaged and she would never regain function. Because the leg would eventually drag and cause wounds and pain, the veterinary team decided the best option for her wellbeing was amputation.
Today Canela is a happy tripod dog who has completely adapted to life on three legs. She runs, plays, walks, and enjoys life just like any other dog. Her condition does not limit her and she does not require special care beyond the love any dog deserves.
